Guided/Directed SOAP: More than a devotional

This style is applicable for all ages. It guides one how to look at Scriptures with understanding.

An Inductive Bible study suitable for teens and adults alike.  A SOAP format to help navigate in gaining an understanding of the Bible while using Inductive, Word, Expository, and book background Bible study methods. Great for discipling small groups as a workbook. There are areas for answering questions and journaling.

What is a Guided/Directed SOAP?

Scripture  (a selected passage)

Observation (specific questions from the reading)

Application (what does God want me to understand about Him, His ways)

Prayer (can be a praise, confession)

It is not a commentary. It is not a study based on an author's interpretation.  Questions in the observation are from the passage of scripture.  Application questions are formulated to help guide one into a better understanding and practical application of the passage. It is an interactive study which helps one to look more deeply in their personal spritual walk with God as the Holy Spirit directs. (John 14:26; 2 Timothy 3:16-17)

The studies are to help understand who God is, what God desires, and how to live one's life for Him.  God wants us to know Him and Jesus Christ. (John 17:3; Jeremiah 29:11-14a)

Adults will be strengthened in their faith as well as challenged in how they can help disciple others in building a stronger personal faith in Jesus Christ.

The Guided/Directed SOAP style is a great way for anyone wanting to start a daily study in the Bible, yet are unsure how to begin. A practical, easy to use format, which is suitable for all ages to grow in their confidence and understanding of the Bible.

Guided/Directed SOAP Bible Study

Guided/Directed SOAP begins with the SOAP (Scripture Observation Application Prayer) yet has questions in the Observation and Application that uses other methods of Bible Study to help understand the passage more completely.  Questions help guide for better understanding.

Types of Bible Studies, definitions

SOAP Bible Study

The SOAP Bible study focuses on S=scripture, O=observation. A=application, P=prayer.

The focus is on the one passage and each person asks themselves how they can live out the truth they discovered from the passage.

I believe this can lead someone to a false understanding of the Bible if they don't have some clear direction and questions regarding the passage.

Inductive Bible Study

Inductive Bible Study uses careful reading noting key words, phrases and repeated ideas.  It engages through questions, understanding context, cross-referencing with other scriptures for better clarification, word studies with dictionaries, and then how one can apply in obedience.

Word Study

The Word study pays careful attention to the words for understanding biblical concepts.  Use of original Greek, Hebrew, Aramaic languages in conjunction to the English dictionaries.

Word studies can also look at other translations of the Bible where a different word was used for comparison for how the other translations can gain better understanding of the Biblical context.

Expository study

An expository study focuses on understanding and explaining a specific passage, aiming to help one understand the intended meaning and how the passage can apply their life.

This method uses careful examination of the text, historical and cultural settings, while paying careful attention before drawing any relevant application.

Book background study method

The book background study method focuses on a subject or book, gathers reference materials (Bible dictionaries, maps, commentaries, archaeological information, history and culture) to gain a broader understanding of the events and history during the writing. It can help contextually as one goes deeper.
